Diagnosis and treatment plan
- The primary examination will consist of a clinical examination which will include both teeth and jaw bones, muscles and temporomandibular joints, a series of intra- and extra-oral photographs, radiographs, dental bearings, and a discussion about the possible treatment options . This schedule is extremely important because it will assess your need for orthodontic treatment in order to determine the right time to begin an orthodontic treatment.
- diagnosis records consist of fingerprints of dental arches and a very careful record of your bite and jaw dynamics. These maneuvers are necessary for us to mount the models plaster of your dental arches into a device called articulator, device that can be programmed to function identically to your temporomandibular joints, allowing us to study the functional relationship between the teeth and the temporomandibular joints . This diagnosis mounting allows the diagnosis of dental occlusion and the joint problems. Also in this stage there will be identified the necessity to perform some more complex radiological examinations of jawbones or of the temporomandibular joints: CBCT or MRI.
- The diagnosis presentation and the establishment of the treatment plan will be performed in a separate session. On this schedule we will provide you a full clinical diagnosis on the existing orthodontic problems and we will present a detailed treatment plan. For complex clinical situations, this treatment plan may involve examinations and maneuvers performed by physicians of other specialties of our team. You will leave with a written summary of the conclusions underlining the treatment and with a costs estimate associated to the treatment plan.
Interdisciplinary approach to clinical situations
Our team of orthodontists and physicians of other specialties will work closely to provide you remarkable aesthetic results, knowing that the most successful and the most natural aesthetics, is nothing but the expression of health state and of the functional harmony of all the system components
Our orthodontists are able to address your clinic situation in interdisciplinary terms, collaborating closely with the other team members because we are aware that a correct solution, especially on adults, requires combining the objectives of orthodontic treatment with the other dental specialties. Dental and Facial Aesthetics are mutually complementary. If we want to perform both a proper aesthetics and a proper functional obstruction, it is clear that we need that the orthodontic treatment should be completed by dental restorative interventions that must restore the dental morphology worn by improper functioning.
Clear treatment objectives
The clear treatment objectives are similar for the patients of all ages: teeth beautifully aligned that work in harmony with the temporomandibular joint, leading thus to a state of health of the entire dental-facial system, effective mastication, health periodontal tissues, proper support for the lips and an ideal facial balance. By clearly defining and combining these treatment objective, the diagnosis capability is increased, thus being reduced the risk of treatment failure.
- When we have clear goals on dental and facial aesthetics, we can choose the optimum treatment option for each patient: non-extraction treatment, tooth extraction treatment, or surgical orthodontic mixed treatment. These treatment objectives lead us also to the proper treatment mechanics, allowing us to position the teeth in optimum position in order to provide the proper support for the lips and to positively influence lower jaw position within the face context.
- the periodontal objective must consider that teeth positioning by orthodontic treatment must be carried out respecting the biological limits of the periodontal tissues, so as not to lead to bone loss and gum recessions.
- the functional objective consists in achieving in all clinical cases a functional occlusion, that must ensure a balanced functioning of all the maxillary-dental system components: teeth, periodontal system, muscles, jawbones and temporomandibular joints. Achieving the functional objective will ensure the maintenance of their health and the long-term stability of the orthodontic treatment.
- establishing the result achieved represents an objective that result from achieving the other treatment objectives above mentioned. The result will be an orthodontic treatment, with a high quality finish, that is not only aesthetic, but it is designed to offer the patient a long-term stable bite, with a minimal wear of the teeth and an optimum oral health.
